Assessment of the status of fish-population in global seas and oceans.

In collaboration with ERASMUS Post-graduate Student education program 2016.

Project duration: 2016

Project leader: S. Manzetti

Principal Investigator: M. Simonazzi, The University of Bologna, School of Sciences, Bologna, 40126 Italia.

Project description:

Seas and oceans have experienced a gradual detrimental development in the last 200 years, leading to the reduction in fish stock populations, extinction of marine species, algal blooms and generic contamination including nutrient pollution in marine areas with reduced circulation. In this project, a systematic gathering and presentation of data is carried out with emphasis on fish stock statistics and global monitoring data. The project introduces novel data of fish stock populations particularly for the North-East Atlantic, and indicates that fish stocks are experiencing a decline. The causes for this are particularly indicated to be anthropogenic activities, pollution and overfishing as well as temperature-related developments in the latest years. The world-wide condition of seas and oceans is alarming, and in combination with global temperature increments and population growth, an inevitable catastrophe of the marine environment and viability can be anticipated.

Keywords: Atlantic ocean, fish-stock, global, assessment, pollution, statistics.
