Biomarkers in diseased and recovered conditions.

Project duration: 2012 - 2013

Project description:

Biomarkers are frequently used in clinical biology to identify and map the stage of development of diseased conditions, such as cancer. During the development of cancer, specific proteins and cellular factors are triggered by the tumors' rearrangement of cell morphology, metabolism and extracellular signalling. In this context, the search for biomarkers has led to discoveries of proteins such as the p53 tumor suppressor, and other DNA regulators and growth factors. This project endeavors to map the landscape of factors and potential biomarkers for diseases such as cancer, heart ischemia and other diseases during various pathological events, such as hypoxia, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling. The importance in developing better knowledge on cellular mechanisms helps in discerning between diseased and recovered conditions, and may also help in identifying missing factors which are pivotal for recovery.
